Carol Dembling, a Berkeley-based painter and collage artist, has spent extended periods of time in Oaxaca, Mexico which has greatly influenced her art. She has studied and worked with world-reknown Oaxacan artist Humberto Batista.
She is intrigued by retablos (devotional paintings) and exvotos (votive offerings) which portray images of religious figures and saints or tell stories of a miraculous recovery...an instant when the marvelous touches the everyday. Her collages are inspired by the surrealistic and wonderous qualities of old and new Mexican folk art.
Recording her experiences and dreams in pictures, her works explore the places between reality and fantasy, Heaven and Earth, as seen through the eyes of a visitor to Mexico.
Join us for Sangria and meet the artist.
